Upcoming Event: Volleyball versus UVU on September 9, 2025 at 7:00 PM

After Title IX was implemented, Utah began building the foundation for women’s collegiate sports and officially launched programs two years later, beginning with tennis in the fall of 1974 and basketball in 1974-75. Programs for volleyball, gymnastics, skiing and softball were ushered in during the 1975-76 athletics year. Cross country and track & field were implemented in 1981 followed by swimming & diving in 1982. Soccer came on board in the fall of 1995 and beach volleyball was added in the spring of 2017.
Utah’s women’s athletics programs rank among the best in the nation. Gymnastics boasts 10 national titles and has finished as the runner-up nine times. Utah is the only program to qualify for all 46 National Gymnastics Championships, has captured the most NCAA All-America awards (389), and has led all of women’s college sports in attendance 11 times since 2010.
The ski team claimed Utah’s first women’s national championship in 1978, winning the AIAW title, and has combined to win 14 NCAA Championships with the men’s team, including the last three. Basketball has received 18 NCAA Tournament berths since 1982, advancing to the Sweet 16 twice and the Elite Eight in 2006. They have won 22 conference championships.
Volleyball has participated in 18 of the last 24 NCAA Tournaments with four Sweet 16 finishes. Softball has qualified for the postseason 21 times (16 NCAA Regionals, 2 Super Regionals) and has five College World Series appearances (including four NCAA).
Soccer has played in the NCAA Tournament eight times since 2002, advancing to the Sweet 16 in 2016. Cross country has qualified for the NCAA Championships four times since 2015 and was crowned the 1981 AIAW Division II National Champion.
As we celebrate women in sports at the University of Utah and the 50th Anniversary of Title IX, Utah Athletics will produce a four-month, cross platform content series entitled “Fifty Years Forward,” focusing on the themes of Opportunity, Empowerment and Legacy.
The series will showcase the people, magical moments, milestones and behind-the-scenes insights from Utah’s rich history of women’s collegiate athletics, bringing those stories to life on our social media and digital platforms.
The “Fifty Years Forward” series will begin on June 23, 50 years to the date when Title IX was signed into law as part of the Education Amendments Act, and lead into our Celebration Weekend, Sept. 30-Oct. 1.
