Current Student-Athletes: Academic Eligibility

Student-athletes must meet all NCAA, Pac-12 Conference and institutional regulations in order to remain eligible to participate in intercollegiate athletics. Continuing eligibility is certified by each student-athlete's Athletics Academic Advisor at the conclusion of each academic term.

NCAA

Full-Time Status:

Student-athletes must be enrolled in a minimum full-time program of studies leading toward a baccalaureate degree, defined as 12 credit hours per semester. Student-athletes that have already received a baccalaureate degree must be enrolled in either 12 credit hours leading toward a second baccalaureate degree or 9 credit hours leading toward a graduate degree.

6 Hour Requirement:

Student-athletes must pass at least six hours each semester in order to be eligible to compete during the following semester.

Progress Toward Degree

In order to be academically eligible, student-athletes must satisfactorily complete 24 semester hours at the University prior to the start of the institution's third semester following the student-athlete's initial, full-time enrollment.

In addition, the student-athlete must complete 18 credit hours in the two regular semesters (i.e., fall and spring) since the beginning of the institution's previous fall term. For student-athletes entering at mid-year or student-athletes that have been granted an exception, the 18 hours must have been earned in the student-athlete's previous two semesters.

Furthermore, a student-athlete must declare a major prior to his/her fifth semester of collegiate enrollment and make progress toward that specific degree as follows:

    (4) 40% of degree requirements must be completed before the fifth semester of enrollment (excluding summer)
    (5) 60% of degree requirements must be completed before the seventh semester of enrollment (excluding summer)
    (6) 80% of degree requirements must be completed before the ninth semester of enrollment (excluding summer)

Pac-12 Conference

Minimum GPA Requirement: Pac-12 Conference regulations require all student-athletes that have completed two or more semesters at a Pac-12 Conference institution to maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in order to be eligible to compete.

University of Utah

Any student-athlete who drops below 12 credits for any reason will immediately be declared ineligible for further practice and competition until such time as he/she is registered in 12 credits again. He/she also will not be eligible for competition between semesters. In addition, he/she will not be allowed to check out equipment, use the strength room or use the training room. Room and board checks will also be cancelled.

University policy states that all undergraduate students are required to maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 2.0. A student-athlete who fails to meet the minimum GPA requirements will be placed on probation. Student-athletes whose most recent term and cumulative GPA are below 2.0 have an advising hold placed on their future registration. A student-athlete whose term GPA is below 2.0 for three terms while the cumulative grade-point average has been continuously below 2.0, is subject to dismissal form the University for two terms. NOTE: The Pac-12 Conference requires a 2.0 cumulative GPA for competition.
