Utah to Offer Closed Captioning at Football Games

Aug 28, 2013

SALT LAKE CITY -- -
The University of Utah will introduce closed captioning services at Rice-Eccles Stadium this season to accommodate fans who are deaf or hard of hearing. The implementation of closed captioning in Rice-Eccles Stadium will be a multi-phased approach beginning with the season-opener against Utah State on Aug. 29.

"Our athletics department and university are committed to creating a welcoming and accessible environment for all members of our community and we are very pleased to be able to offer closed captioning in Rice-Eccles Stadium this season," said Utah Director of Athletics Dr. Chris Hill.

The closed captioning will be provided by a live stenographer and will include all public address announcements, videos, and on-field officials' calls. The first phase will feature iPad minis available for check-out at the stadium guest services locations on the east and west concourses of the stadium. For more information on closed caption services, please call Rice-Eccles Stadium at 801-581-7695.

The second phase of the plan is the installation of a new LED board in the northeast corner of the stadium that will display closed captioning, scores and static advertising. The estimated installation date of the new LED board is midseason.

Michael Shelton, the Public Venue Chair for the Utah Communications Access Network (Utah-CAN), said, "Utah-CAN, representing a consortium of hearing loss organizations, wishes to congratulate the University of Utah for providing captioning at its upcoming football season." Shelton thanked the U. for providing, "... a new era ... that will enable those who are hearing impaired to fully participate, understand and enjoy the programs of the stadium. As the first to offer such public venue captioning in the state of Utah, the University of Utah will also serve to encourage like accessibility by other universities and organizations providing public sport venues. We greatly appreciate the support of President Pershing, the Athletics Department, Rice-Eccles Stadium and Arena Event Services Department, and the Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action, for making this possible."
