LOS ANGELES – No. 20 Utah Softball completed a sweep of No. 10 UCLA with a 4-0 victory on Sunday evening.
"Our team is solid in all three areas; pitching, defense and hitting," head coach
Amy Hogue said. "This weekend proves that we can win on a big stage. That's a key piece to have if we want to achieve our goals this season. I was very proud of what we were able to accomplish this weekend."
Miranda Viramontes improved to 7-0 with her second win of the series, going four innings and allowing just two hits and striking out three.
Katie Donovan entered in relief and threw three shutout innings to seal the conquest
UCLA entered this series, fifth in the nation in home runs and 10
th in slugging percentage but totaled just three runs on 13 hits.
Klyee Perez came into the three-game set batting .494, leading in the nation in doubles and ranking fourth in total hits. However, she went 0-for-9 and was unable to set the table for the Bruins.
Meanwhile, Utah's leadoff hitter,
Delilah Pacheco started the game by tripling to left and scoring on an illegal pitch to set the tone in the finale.
After a walk to
Hannah Flippen,
Anissa Urtez was able to beat a throw to first and avoid a double play. That proved vital as
Heather Bowen smashed a double to the right-center gap for a 2-0 lead.
In the third,
Alyssa Barrera started things with a single to left. After one pitch in the next at-bat, the freshman would come around to score on a Flippen double.
An Urtez single put runners on the corners but Flippen was forced at home on a grounder to short. However,
Ally Dickman delivered another clutch two-out knock, driving a single to left for a 4-0 lead.
Meanwhile, the UCLA threats were dealt with by Viramontes, Donovan and the Utah infielders. The Bruins put runners in scoring position during the second, fourth and sixth innings but could not break through against a stingy Ute defense.
"This sweep should be celebrated by everyone who ever played for Utah," Hogue added. "It took years of building to become a team that could achieve something like this. I'm thankful to everyone that worked so hard and elevated the level of play for our program."
Utah will now travel down to Provo for a Wednesday night contest at BYU. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. and can be seen live on BYU TV
