SALT LAKE CITY – University of Utah sophomore golfers
Mitchell Schow and
Jordan Costello have each qualified for the 2017 U.S. Amateur Championship, which will be held at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., Aug. 14-20.
This marks the second straight year that both Schow and Costello have qualified for the U.S. Amateur, as both players competed in the event last year in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
"It's great to have both Jordan and Mitchell back in the U.S. Amateur," said Utah head golf coach
Garrett Clegg. "This will be the second consecutive year for each of them. They have both put in a ton of work over the summer on their golf games and it is always fun to see hard work rewarded. The U.S. Amateur is the most prestigious Amateur tournament in the sport of golf. It will be fun to see how they play next month."
Schow, who just finished up his first season with the Utes in 2016-17, tied for first-place at the U.S. Amateur Qualifier at Alpine Country Club earlier this week, posting a two-round score of 10-under par (65-69=134).
The Ogden, Utah, native carded eight birdies and just one bogey on the way to shooting 7-under par in the first round. He then went onto post 3-under par in the final round, which included three birdies and an eagle on his score card.
Costello, who also finished up his true freshman season with the Utes this past year, carded a two-round score of 7-under par (68-69=137) on the way to earning the lone U.S. Amateur qualifying bid from Three Crowns Golf Club in Casper, Wyo.
Costello, who hails from Pinedale, Wyo., posted four birdies and zero bogies in a first round that resulted in shooting 4-under par. He followed with six birdies and a couple of bogies in the final round on the way to carding 3-under par.
Both golfers bettered their qualifying scores from a year ago. Schow carded 8-under par during his qualifier in 2016, while Costello posted a score of 1-over par.
Riviera Country Club will play at par-70 and 7,272 yards for the event. Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles, which will co-host stroke play during the championship, will play at par-70 and 6,722 yards. A complete schedule for the event is below.
