LOS ANGELES – The Utah baseball team loaded the bases in the 10
th inning, but the Utes were unable to score vs. Loyola Marymount and the game ultimately was called a 9-9 tie after 10 on Sunday at Page Stadium. The matchup was declared a tie due to the timing of Utah's return travel.
Seven Utes combined for 16 hits on the day, with each in that group posting a multi-hit performance and
Kai Roberts leading the way in a 4-for-5 afternoon. Leadoff man
Carter Booth and nine-hole hitter
Landon Frei each scored three runs, with Frei's performance coming in his collegiate debut. Roberts and
Chase Anderson drove in two runs apiece as well.
The Utes' half of the 10
th took shape when
Alex Baeza's one-out single put
Matt Richardson on second base.
Dakota Duffalo followed up with a base hit of his own to load the bases still with one away. Then,
TJ Clarkson hit a grounder to first for the second out, and the LMU first baseman fired to second to get Duffalo for the inning-ending double play.
With Richardson running from third on contact, and the force at second eliminated once Clarkson was retired, it was ruled Duffalo was tagged out at second base before Richardson could cross the plate with the go-ahead run.
Right-hander
Zac McCleve was called upon with two outs in the LMU half of the 10
th, entering with runners in scoring position. McCleve's first batter was intentionally walked, then after going down in the count 3-0, McCleve fired a strike, battled through four straight foul balls, and got Diego Baqueiro to go down swinging on the ninth pitch of the at-bat for the game-ending strikeout.
Clarkson, who began the game at designated hitter, also pitched 2.2 innings with three strikeouts and two hits allowed.
Cam Day started on the bump, his collegiate debut, going the first three innings.
Utah once again jumped out early on the scoreboard, plating a run in the first inning.
Carter Booth led off the ballgame with a single up the middle, took advantage of two wild pitches, then came home from third on a base knock from Anderson.
Then, in the top of the second, Frei stepped in with one out in his first collegiate at bat. Frei, facing an 0-2 count, patiently worked the count full and sent the payoff pitch over Page Stadium's Blue Monster in left field for a solo homer.
Immediately following Frei's shot, Booth laid down a beautiful bunt and hustled down the line to reach first base. He moved up on a single and fly out, earning the final 90 feet thanks to
Jayden Kiernan's two-out single. It gave the Utes a 3-0 lead after two innings of play.
That score remained until the bottom of the third when Loyola Marymount put up four runs to take a 4-3 lead. But the Lions' lead was short-lived, as Anderson's hot bat produced a fourth-inning single to plate Roberts with the tying run.
The Utes added three more tallies in the fifth inning to take a 7-4 lead. Clarkson's sac fly scored Baeza, then a two-out throwing error gave Utah two more runs. LMU would counter in the last of the sixth, using a homer to left center after a leadoff walk and hit batsman to knot things up at seven-all. Later in the inning a two-run single put the Lions in front, 9-7.
Utah was quick to bounce back and tie the score at nine, capitalizing in the seventh on back-to-back throwing errors by LMU. It put Booth and Frei and scoring position, with each later scoring on Roberts' base hit to left center. In the ninth the Utes threatened with the go-ahead run at second base, but a line-out turned into a double play and ended the frame.
The Utes, who won the first two games of this series, now turn their focus to a Tuesday, Feb. 22 game at in-state foe Utah Valley. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. MT at UCCU Ballpark in Orem, Utah.
