SALT LAKE CITY – Four different batters recorded two hits each, but the Utah baseball team could not answer a middle innings surge by Stanford as the Utes were topped in an 8-2 ballgame on Saturday at Smith's Ballpark.
The Utes will recognize their six-max senior class prior to Sunday's game vs. Stanford, including third baseman
Chase Anderson, first baseman
Alex Baeza, shortstop
Matt Richardson, along with right-handed pitchers
Dusty Schramm,
Matthew Sox and
David Watson. The ceremony is slated to begin at approximately 12:45 p.m. MT with first pitch following at 1 p.m. MT.
Utah (25-23-1, 10-16 Pac-12) saw two hits apiece down the lineup from right fielder
Kai Roberts, designated hitter
Jayden Kiernan, catcher
Davis Cop and center fielder
Dakota Duffalo. Duffalo had a two-out, opposite field RBI double in the fourth inning and second baseman
Landon Frei drove in a run in the first inning as well.
Baeza walked twice on the day to extend his reached base streak to eight straight games.
Starting pitcher
Jaden Harris (1-3) went five innings for Utah, with
Brady Maylett,
Randon Hostert and
Dane Baker working out of the bullpen. Hostert dealt three innings of shutout ball, allowing just two hits and striking out a batter.
The Cardinal went up by a 2-0 score in the first inning, but Utah quickly halved the deficit in the bottom of the frame. Roberts opened up with a first pitch single up the middle and hustled all the way around when Frei put a base hit into right center field. Stanford pulled back ahead by a pair in the second inning on an RBI groundout.
Duffalo's timely double came on the heels of a four-pitch walk to Baeza and a single by Cop that put Baeza in scoring position. Two batters later, Duffalo sent the 0-1 pitch into the right field corner, scoring Baeza from second base and bringing Utah within one at a 3-2 score.
But Stanford would pull away with the final five runs of the ballgame, using a two-run homer in the fifth inning, an RBI double and sac fly in the seventh, then another solo shot in the ninth.
