BATON ROUGE, La. –
Julia Jimenez homered and drove in three runs while the Utes' pitching staff allowed only two hits as the University of Utah softball team overwhelmed the Ohio Bobcats by a score of 8-0 on Sunday on the final day of the Tiger Classic, which was held at Tiger Park.
This victory improves Utah's 2023 record to 7-3.
Jimenez her teammates seized the initiative immediately in the top of the first, which started with a
Haley Denning infield hit. Two batters later, Denning motored home from second on an
Ellessa Bonstrom double and then Jimenez launched a two-run homer to left-center for a quick 3-0 advantage.
Jimenez increased her team's lead to 4-0 in the third with a safety through the middle that scored Bonstrom, who had singled and stole second and
Hailee White came around later in the frame to boost Utah's lead to five.
The Utes closed out the scoring with three more in the fourth, sparked by a Denning hit and a stolen base. Three batters later, Denning swiped home as part of a double steal and Bonstrom scored soon after on an error. When
Sophie Jacquez rocketed an RBI double into left-center one hitter later, Utah had an 8-0 edge.
Three different Utah pitchers combined on a two-hitter in which no Bobcat reached third.
Mariah Lopez started and escaped a two-on, one-out jam in the first on the strength of a line drive double play turned by Jimenez and
Aliya Belarde. Lopez then retired the next five batters she faced before
Sarah Ladd entered in relief and fired a scoreless 1 1/3 innings.
Halle Morris took over in the fifth and set down three-in-a-row to lock up the win.
