SALT LAKE CITY –
Mariah Lopez went the distance in the circle without allowing a single earned run and helped lead the No. 19 University of Utah softball team to a 4-1 victory over the No. 5 Stanford Cardinal in the opener of a three-game series at the Dumke Family Softball Stadium on Friday evening.
The Utes have now rattled off four straight triumphs to reach 27-8 in 2023 with a Pac-12 mark of 9-4. Stanford 31-7 overall and 8-5 in conference.
"I'm so happy with the way we played today," said head coach
Amy Hogue. "This team doesn't care who they play. They believe big about themselves and that really showed today. Mariah was excellent again today. She had everything working and made it difficult for Stanford to have any idea what was coming.
"Our hitters squared up a lot of balls today. Leaving 10 on base was hard to swallow, but we had so many hits today off of one of the most respected pitchers in the country, so I'm not going to gripe one bit about us not scoring more runs."
Facing off against the team with the best ERA in the Pac-12, the Utes smacked 12 hits, the most the Cardinal has allowed in 2023 and it started before the visitors could even get an out.
Haley Denning led-off the first inning with a single and
Aliya Belarde followed suit with a safety of her own to put two with nobody out.
Ellessa Bonstrom then rapped Utah's third straight hit through the right side to plate Denning with the game's first run.
Lopez's work on the mound made that lead stand up through the first three frames, but in the fourth, Stanford used a pair of hits, a wild pitch and an error to knot the score at one and that tie stood until the bottom of the fifth.
A infield hit from Bonstrom got the stanza started and
Julia Jimenez proceeded to line a double into left-center, giving Utah runners on second and third with nobody out. When
Sophie Jacquez's hot smash eluded the Stanford's third baseman, Bonstrom scored the tie-breaking tally to make the score 2-1. Three batters later,
Kendall Lundberg's grounder to third became a two-run error when the throw to first was wild and the Utes handed their starter a three-run advantage.
In both the sixth and the seventh, the Cardinal put a man on, but Lopez refused to let either opportunity turn into a rally. She retired six of the last seven batters she faced and didn't allow a single extra base hit in seven innings. Lopez also struck out six while issuing just one walk to pick up her 12th win of the year.
