ELDORA, Colo. - Seven members of the University of Utah Alpine ski team finished in the top 10 as the 2012 season opened on Friday with the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Skiing Association's Giant Slalom Qualifier at the Eldora Mountain Resort.
No team scores were kept, as this was first of two qualifiers for the alpine racers. Four Utah athletes were in the top 10 in the women's giant slalom race, while two more finished in the top five on the men's side.
In the women's giant slalom race, junior Anna Kocken placed in the top two for the second time in her career after finishing in second place for the highest finish of any Ute on the day. Her second run time of 1:02.30 was the second-fastest performance among all competitors and ended up with a total time of 1:56.58.
In the first race of senior campaign, Tii-Maria Romar earned a fourth-place finish in a combined time of 1:56.89. Her first-run time of 54.07 was the fastest performance turned in during the initial run of the day. Romar now has finished among the top four in a race six times over her career.
Newcomer Julie Bordeau made her Utah debut with a fifth-place effort in a combined time of 1:57.55, while Jaime Dupratt, a sophomore from Park City, Utah, was not far behind with a career-high finish of sixth place in a time of 1:58.32 in her two races.
In the men's giant slalom race, senior Nick Cohee, Gardnerville, Nev., native, and junior Ryan Wilson led the way for Utah with third and fourth-place finishes in the individual standings, respectively.
Cohee took third with a time of 1:54.93 on the day. His highest finish last season was fifth place, in the RMISA slalom qualifier on Feb. 10, 2011 and in the giant slalom at the RMISA/NCAA West Region Championships on Feb. 25, 2011.
The University of Colorado's Spencer Nelson Memorial Invitational will open tomorrow with the giant slalom race at the Eldora Mountain Resort.
