SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah ski team begins the 2012 season with the RMISA Alpine Qualifier as well as the alpine portion of the University of Colorado's Spencer James Nelson Memorial Invitational this weekend at the Eldora Mountain Resort.

The giant slalom race of the RMISA Alpine Qualifier will kick off the season on Friday, starting at 8:30 a.m. The GS race of the Nelson Memorial Invitational will be held on Saturday, followed by the slalom on Sunday.

Live results will be available at live-timing.com.

"We have had some excellent early training and race results in Colorado," Utah Director of Skiing Kevin Sweeney said. "I feel the team is skiing well. It will be nice to get the RMISA season underway. [Head Alpine Coach] Jaka [Korencan] and [Assistant Alpine Coach] Will [McDonald] have done an excellent job preparing the team. The athletes are ready to go."

The Utes finished second at the NCAA Championships in 2011 and are looking for their 12th national title in school history this season. Utah last competed at the CU Invitational in 2009 where the Utes took fourth place. Krogdahl took 13th in the slalom and 23rd in the GS as a freshman.

Unfortunately, the Utes will travel to Eldora without standout Alpine team members Jeremy Elliot and Eian Sandvik. Both have recently suffered injuries that will prevent them from starting at the CU Invite.

"This is a very big hit for us," Sweeney said. "We are regrouping and digesting this development."

"It is extremely unfortunate that just before the season started, we lost [Elliot] and [Sandvik]," Korencan said. "I wish them a speedy recovery. The rest of the team has been training extremely well throughout the fall and winter break. We could not have asked for a more professional, devoted, and passionate team. We are skiing extremely well right now so we are ready to start the season."

Additional information and comments regarding the status of Elliot and Sandvik are forthcoming.
