SALT LAKE CITY - After completing the first two meets of the 2013 season, the University of Utah ski team has 11 days before its next competition at the New Mexico Invitational in Red River, N.M.

Upcoming Schedule

Nordic events will kick things off in the New Mexico Invite at the Enchanted Forest Cross Country Ski and Snowshoe Area with the 5/5-km Classical races on Friday, Feb. 1, followed by the 10/10-km Freestyle events on Saturday, Feb. 2.

The Utah Invitational starts with Alpine races in Loveland, Colo. The giant slalom will be on Wednesday, Feb. 6 and the slalom will take place on Thursday, Feb. 7.

The Alpine portion of the New Mexico Invite will consist of slalom races at the Red River Ski Area on Saturday, Feb. 9 and Sunday, Feb. 10.

Denver Invite Nordic Review

The Utes completed the Denver Invitational in third place in the overall team standings with a combined total of 796 points, which was 37 shy of runner-up Denver. Colorado ended up in first place with 852 points. Utah was second in the meet's Nordic standings with 420 points, which included 12 top-10 finishes.

All four of Utah's Nordic competitors on the men's side placed in the top 10 in both races last weekend. The Utes led the way in Sunday's men's 15-km Classical race with a total of 123 points and were second in Saturday's men's 10-km Freestyle with 108 points (only four shy of leader Alaska Anchorage).

Einar Ulsund finished as the runner-up in the 15-km Classic last Sunday and third in the 10-km Freestyle on Saturday. The Trondheim, Norway native has finished fourth or better in each of Utah's first four races to start this season.

Senior Miles Havlick was fifth in the 15-km Classic and eighth in the 10-km Freestyle. He has been in the top five three times in 2013 and 26 times over his career.

 

 

The freshman duo of Niklas Persson and Noe Bellet put together impressive performances as well. Persson turned in a sixth-place effort in the 15-km Classic and was 10th in the 10-km Freestyle, while Bellet was ninth in the Freestyle and eighth in the Classical.

The Ute women's Nordic squad was third in the standings of Sunday's 10-km Classical, led again by Rose Kemp, who has been impressively consistent at the start of her senior season. The Boise, Idaho native recorded her second top-five effort of the season, and the sixth of her career, with a fourth-place finish on Sunday before taking seventh in Saturday's 5-km Freestyle.

Parker Tyler and Anna Svendsen also registered top-10 finishes in Sunday's 10-km Classic. Tyler, a senior from Brattleboro, Vt., finished eighth for her first top-10 performance of the season as well as the seventh of her career. Svendsen was the third Ute among the top 10 in Sunday's race as she finished 10th for her first career top-10 effort at Utah.

Two Utes in Top Three RMISA's NCAA Women's Slalom Qualifying Rankings

With a victory at the Colorado Invitational and a second-place effort at the Denver Invitational, Ana Kobal is atop the RMISA's NCAA Women's Slalom Qualifying list. Kobal is followed closely by teammate Kristiina Rove, who is in third place after taking third place at DU and seventh at CU.

In the women's giant slalom rankings, junior Jaime Dupratt leads the way for the Utes as she is currently tied for fourth place with Denver's Devin Delaney. DuPratt, a Park City, Utah native, took third at both the Colorado and Denver Invitationals.

NCAA Men's Alpine Qualification Points Update

Andy Trow and Jeremy Elliot are part of a three-way tie for third place in the RMISA's Giant Slalom Qualifying points list after four scored events.

Trow was really successful in both the of the qualifier races, including a victory on Jan. 11 at Winter Park, Colo., and a fourth-place effort in the season-opener on Jan. 7 in Eldora, Colo.

Elliott owns a pair of podium finishes already this season, which included a runner-up finish in the GS qualifier at Eldora as well as a third-place performance at the Denver Invite.

Senior Ryan Wilson is currently listed 13th, bolstered by a fifth-place finish in the second GS qualifier at Winter Park.

Trow is the highest ranked Ute in the slalom standings as he is 20th, which included a ninth-place finish at the Denver Invite. Elliot is immediately behind Trow in the 21st position.

Ulsund Tied for Second Among RMISA Nordic Skiers in NCAA Qualification Points

After finishing on the podium in three of the first four races of 2013, Ulsund is tied with Lukas Ebner of Alaska-Anchorage for second place in the RMISA's NCAA Qualification Points rankings.

Havlick is listed next in the rankings in fourth place, highlighted by a victory in the Classical and a runner-up finish in the Freestyle at the Colorado Invitational to start the season. Thanks to four straight top-10 finishes to start his Utah career, Bellet is eighth, while Persson follows in 12th.

In the women's Nordic rankings, Kemp is in a fifth-place tie with Colorado's Maria Nordstrom. Kemp has placed 10th or better in all four races this season, while Tyler currently finds herself in a 12th-place tie.
