SALT LAKE CITY - Former Ute alpine skier Pierre Olsson recently earned a spot on the premier Europa Cup circuit. Olsson has also been invited to compete with the Swedish National team this upcoming fall and early winter seasons. Currently, Olsson is the third ranked giant slalom skier in Sweden.

"I think Pierre is a great example of how a student-athlete can mature mentally and physically in our program," said Head Alpine Coach Aaron Atkins. "He has taken that experience and achieved great results, while also moving up in the sport of ski racing."

"This is a great opportunity for Pierre as he has only brushed the surface of his talent," added Atkins. "With new found maturity and outlook on life, he can focus on being one of Sweden's best."

While at Utah, Olsson was a true team leader on and off the slopes. In his first year with the Utes, Olsson was the 2002 NCAA silver medalist in the giant slalom and the slalom events. The following season, the All-American raced to sixth in the giant slalom and seventh in the slalom at the 2003 NCAA National Championships. The Borlange, Sweden, native was also a two-year recipient of the David Novelle Outstanding Skier Award.

"While at the U., I have learned that ski racing isn't everything," remarked Olsson. "I have options in my life, which have made me more relaxed thanks to my degree (economics). Before I was devastated if I did not have the results I wanted, but now I know it's not the end of the world. I think this has helped keep my goals in perspective."
