Josiah Purss Breaks Utah's Platform Diving School Record

One of only three to place in top eight in all three disciplines.

Richard Marschner is entering his fourth season as the head diving coach of the Utah swimming and diving program.

Marschner recently led Josiah Purss to All-America honors in 2013 - the second male diver in Utah history to qualify for the NCAA Championships and Utah's first All-American diver since 2006. He has led nine different divers to the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships with four athletes earning at least one top-10 finish at Zones. The Utah men have been the second-highest scoring diving team at the Pac-12 Championships the last two seasons.

The Utah divers experienced one of the best seasons in Utah history during the 2012-13 campaign. In addition to finishing 16th on the one-meter at the NCAA Championships to earn Honorable Mention All-America honors, Purss broke the school record in the platform dive at the Zone Diving Championships. He finished fourth in both events at the Zone meet. Kersten Merry was one of only two divers at the Zone meet to place in the top-10 in all three disciplines and was the first alternate for the NCAA Championships. Five of the six Utah divers at the Zone meet qualified for finals on at least one event.

At the 2013 Pac-12 Championships, divers had five top-eight finishes, highlighted by a fourth-place finish on the one-meter from Merry. Caleb Herrick and Merry both earned Pac-12 Diver of the Month awards in December, the first to earn the award since the Utes joined the Pac-12.

During the 2011-12 season, Utah's first in the Pac-12, Marschner led the divers to four top-10 finishes and three top-five finishes at the Pac-12 Diving Championships. Nelson Foo finished third on the platform, which was the first Pac-12 podium finish for any athlete in Utah's history. At the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships, the Utes snagged three top-10 spots.

In 2010-11, Marschner coached Queenie Yu to the Mountain West Conference platform championship. Ellis Walters and Foo each won Mountain West Conference Diver of the Week honors and were selected to the All-MWC team. All five members of the Utah diving team grabbed top-eight finishes at the MWC Championships with four divers placing in the top-20 at the Zone Diving Championships.

While attending the Louisville, Marschner was a four-time runner-up at the Conference USA Championships and qualified for the 2003 and 2004 NCAA Zone Diving Championships. He also served as a team captain. He graduated from Louisville in 2005 with a B.A. in political science and a B.S. in justice administration.

Following graduation, Marschner worked in multiple high diving shows around the world from 2005-07 in Dalian, China; Metz, France and Lake George, NY. His performances included 70 foot high-dives, fire-dives and other stunts at various theme parks.

Prior to being hired at Utah, Marschner served as the head diving coach at the University of New Orleans from 2008-10. At the time of his hiring he was tabbed to be the first diving coach at New Orleans since 1992 and was charged with restarting a dormant program that had also been devastated by Hurricane Katrina. While at UNO, he coached two divers to the NCAA Zone D meet. His divers finished in the top-eight 11 times in two years at the Sun Belt Conference Championships, including two silver medals in his final year.

From 2004-07, Marschner coached with the Louisville Area Diving club team (currently Cardinal Dive Club) as the head coach of the high school group and the assistant coach for the Junior Olympic group. While in college, Marschner spent time as the head diving coach at the Owl Creek Country Club.

Richard lives in Salt Lake City with his wife, May. They enjoy running marathons, skiing, camping, hiking, fishing, and cliff diving.
