Nick Soedel claims school record in 100 free

Los Angeles, Calif. - In it's last duel meet of the season, University of Utah Swimming and Diving men were on fire at McDonalds Swim Stadium, breaking two school records and several personal records. The fifth-ranked Trojans ultimately claimed the meet 157-138.

Soedel, Karson Applin, Bjorn Gunnarsson and Ken Tiltges teamed up to claim the school record, set last year, in the 400 free relay with a time of 2:57.64. Nick Soedel touched in a record-breaking 100 free split time of 43.84 in the same event. Soedel also shattered his previous personal record of 44.49.

"This gives us great confidence to compete tough at the Pac-12 Championships," said Utah head coach Greg Winslow. "I'm very proud of our guys. This is a big way to end our season."

The Utes continued their hot streak as Applin claimed the win in the 100 fly (48.02) and the 100 breast (55.32), recording a new PRs in both events. Applin came just milliseconds shy of breaking the 100 breast school record.

Soedel headed the 50 free and also broke his PR for the fourth time this season with a 20.13 time. Alex Brown tied his PR and took third in the same event (21.31).

In diving, Caleb Herrick grabbed the win in 1-meter dives (293.10), while Brandon Stoppelmoor followed in third (257.80) and Nelson Foo was fourth (237.00).

The three-meter dive place Foo in second (328.35), Herrick in third (304.05) and Stoppelmoor in fourth (302.55).



More Utes impressed as Austin Fiascone took third in the 100 back (50.39) and Alexandre Fernandes placed fourth (50.64).

Ryan Hansen took fourth in the 1650 free (15.45.80), while Eric Bonicelli came in just behind in fifth (16.17.52).

Major Robinson and Andy Lamb claimed the fourth and fifth spots in the 200 free (1:40.78 and 1:41.19). Robinson also came in fourth in the 200 back (1:49.17).

Tiltges snagged fourth in the 100 breast (55.87) and third in the 200 breast (2:05.11). Corey Williams was just behind in the 200 breast with a time of 2:05.39.

In the 500 free, Hansen finished third (4:33.40) and Graham Charlton was fifth (4:46.88).

Winter Heaven took third in the 100 fly (49.79) and Fernandes was fourth (49.91).

The team of Fernandez, Lamb, Heaven and Brown touched in 3:02.37 to take third in the 400 free relay, while Fernandes, Applin, Eric Murray and Gunnarsson grabbed third in the 200 medley relay.

On Wednesday in Federal Way Wash., the Ute women enter into the Pac-12 Championships and the Utah Diving team competes in the Pac-12 Diving Championships. Competition continues through Saturday. The men's Pac-12 Championships will take place Feb.29-March 3 in Long Beach, Calif.
