Federal Way, Wash. - The diving portion of the championships commenced yesterday with the prelims of the men’s three-meter event. In an event that featured NCAA All-Americans, Utah had a very strong showing placing by three divers amongst the top 16 with Brandon Stoppelmoor placing 14th, Caleb Herrick 10th and Nelson Foo fifth which qualified him for the finals in the later on in the evening. Foo bettered his prelims score by going 342.45 in the final and narrowly missed out on moving up a few spots as he held on for a fifth place finish.
The women followed suit on the one-meter board and had an equally impressive result against competition that included more NCAA-All Americans and Olympians. Freshman Jasmine Matkovic placed 13th overall in the event.
Junior Ellis Walters had survived a few shaky dives to qualify for the finals where she really turned it up. After qualifying eighth she posted a lifetime-best score of 304.90 to shoot up into fourth place, narrowly missing a spot on the podium.
“I thought we made a heck of a statement today," said Utah diving coach Richard Marschner. "The divers surprised everyone in the conference and we announced that we had in fact arrived in the Pac-12. We couldn’t have asked for a better start to the diving competition.”
