Petra Soininen qualifies for NCAA Championships in 100 fly.

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Hitting the half-way mark of the Pac-12 Conference Championships, the University of Utah women's swimming and diving team sits in seventh place with 234 points collected over the last three days.
"We, as a coaching staff, are extremely pround of our team and how they have persevered," said Utah inerim head coach Richard Marschner. "We had some great performances and showed everyone how much heart this team has."
Junior Nicole Ligeza recorded an NCAA `B' qualifying time for the second night, this time in the 100 breast (1:02.01) for 12th place. Her preliminary time of 1:01.97 was just .05 seconds shy of the Utah school record.
Junior Traycie Swartz also recorded her second NCAA `B' qualifying time with a 14th-place finish in the 100 back (54.11).
Freshman Petra Soininen became the third Ute to qualify for the NCAA Championships with a time of 54.13 in the 100 fly for 17th place. Treasa Ring brought in points for the Utes in the same event, placing 24th (55.58).
Swartz, Ligeza, Soininen and Zuch teamed up for ninth in the 400 medley relay (3:40.21).
Sophomore Kersten Merry finished fourth in the 1-meter dive (196.45), just short of the podium.
"Kersten and Josiah dove exceptionally well tonight," said Marschner. "It was great to see them in the "A" final going toe to toe with everyone."
Competition resumes tomorrow at King County Aquatic Center with preliminaries at 11 a.m. PT and finals at 6 p.m. PT.
