MINNEAPOLIS - On Friday, the University of Utah divers continued competition at the NCAA Zone E Diving Regional Championships at the Minnesota Aquatics Center.
"We had another really good day here," said Utah diving coach Richard Marschner. "Getting three people into finals is a big accomplishment considering this exact group had only two finals appearances total in the entire meet last year."
Both men representing Utah qualified for the final round of the 3-meter dive.
Nelson Foo earned 300.70 points during the preliminaries of the 3-meter dive and finished 16th place overall (611). His complete score tops his performance last year by 40 points.
Brandon Stoppelmoor tallied a preliminary score of 309.70 in the 3-meter, which surpasses his score last year by over 70 points. He earned an overall score of 607.65 to take 17th place.
"Brandon has really turned the corner at this meet," Marschner stated. "He has certainly asserted himself as a diver that is up-and-coming. He will really be able to compete at a high level next year."
Ellis Walters earned a spot in the final round of the 1-meter dive after she posted a score of 248.55 in the preliminaries. Her finals-only score was the 10th highest in the round (255.60). Walters finished in 15th place overall with a total score of 504.15.
"Ellis had another solid day and the exciting thing is that she can do even better," Marschner said. " In reality, she has had only 3 months to train all her dives due to her surgery. For her to be competing at such a high level just speaks to how great she can be with a full season of training."
Marshner anticipates good things for the Ute divers on the final day of competition, which resumes at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
"We have already had five finals qualifications and should get two more tomorrow."
