Utes Complete Second Day of NCAA Championships

March 29, 2013

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The University of Utah continued competing at the NCAA Mens' Swimming & Diving Championships at IU Natatorium as Nick Soedel, Josiah Purss and Kristian Kron represented the Utes.

Fresh off Soedel and Purss' lifetime-best All-American performances yesterday, the three Ute competitors came up shy of the finals, but their feats in the pool continue to impress onlookers.

The Utes have six total points and are 27th in the country.

"We had a solid day with Kristian and Nick swimming their third-best events," Utah assistant coach Jonas Persson said. "Tomorrow is our final and best day. Kristian is swimming his top event, the 200 backstroke, and Nick is swimming the 100 free, which he is seeded 15th. We are hoping to make it to the finals in both events and it should be the best day for the two Utah swimmers."

Purss claimed the Utes' highest placing of the day by taking 20th on the 3-meter board (331.55). Despite missing the finals by a slim 15 points, Purss was the second-highest placing freshman.

"Josiah was just a little off today," Utah Interim Director of Swimming & Diving Richard Marschner said. "In a meet of this caliber, that makes it difficult to score. He still wound up in the top 20 and that's not bad at all for a freshman at this meet."

Kron grabbed 30th in the 400 IM with in a personal-best 3:49.85, while Soedel earned 35th in the 200 free (1:36.54).

Tomorrow's competition is much anticipated as all three Utes take on their best events. Soedel has the 100 free, Kron takes the 200 back and Purss will hit the platform during tomorrow's competition. Each of these men are Utah school record holders in their respective event.
