SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah Women's Swimming and Diving team fell 185-114 to the reigning national champions and back-to-back Pac-12 Conference champions, California, Saturday at Ute Natatorium.

"I was really impressed with our team," said Utah head coach Greg Winslow.  "That was a very successful meet. Our performance and expectations are on us. There are no reasons to be intimidated by these teams. Our focus is going to lie on how we improve ourselves. We are going to work on the little things, the turns and the starts, and head into the rest of the season."

The Utes came out with a win in the 200 meldey relay (1:44.13) due to the efforts of Traycie Swartz, Nicole Ligeza, Petra Soininen and Sami Zuch to get off to an early lead.

California came back to win the next six events. The streak was halted as Swartz won the 100 free (51.33) and she also took second in the 100 back (55.87).

Kersten Merry competed on the boards for the Utes for the first time and swept the diving events with 281.47 points on the 1-meter and 276.07 points on the 3-meter.

Zuch topped her 500 free race with a time of 4:57.53, while also taking third in the 200 free (1:52.19).

Soininen contributed two runner-up finishes in the 200 fly (2:08.60) and the 100 fly (58.08), while Ligeza placed second in the 200 breast (2:22.90).

Other notable Ute performances included LeighAnne Oliver's third-place finish in the 1000 free (10:48.65) and Melissa Paakh's third-place performance in the 100 fly (58.46).

The Utes men's and women's teams head to Las Vegas on Nov. 10 to face UNLV and University of British Columbia at 2 p.m. PT.
