SALT LAKE CITY- Utah women’s swimming and diving heads to the NCAA Women’s Championships, beginning Thursday, March 20, through Saturday, March 22, at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. Utah will be represented individually by Traycie Swartz, Nicole Ligeza, Stina Colleou and Samamtha Zuch with Petra Soininen, Giuliana Gigliotti, Amanda Barrett and Maryssa McArthur will be joining the Utes for relay events. Diver Kersten Merry will also represent the Utes.
“We are so excited to be sending the largest contingent of competitors in program history to the women's NCAA championships this week in Minneapolis. To have eight swimmers and one diver competing shows tremendous growth for our program this season and we are excited to see how many points we can score and how many All-American honors we can garner this week,” said Utah head coach Joe Dykstra.
Swartz will swim in the 50 free and the 100 free as well as the 100 back. Her 50 free time is the 15th fastest time in the nation. She finished eighth at the Pac-12 Championships in both the 50 and 100 free and also holds the school record in both events. Ligeza will be swimming in the 100 breast, 200 breast and 200 IM. She finished fourth at the Pac-12s in the 100 breast and holds the school record in the event.
Colleou will be swimming in two events, the 100 breast and the 200 breast. At the 2013 Winter National Championships, she took third in the 200 breast where she was the highest finishing collegiate athlete in the event. She was second at the Pac-12 Championships in the 200 breast. Zuch will be swimming in the 1650 free as well as the 500 free. She finished in sixth at the Pac-12 Championships in the 1,650 free and holds the school record.
Utah will compete in both the 400 medley relay and 800 free relay. In the 800 free relay, Swartz, Zuch, Barrett and McArthur was sixth at the Pac-12 Championships in the event with a school-record time of 7:11.05. The time is 28th-fastest in the country in the event. In the 400 medley relay, the Utes finished fifth at Pac-12’s with Swartz, Ligeza, Soininen and Gigliotti swimming a school-record time of 3:36.19.
In diving, Merry set a new school record in platforms at the NCAA Zone Championships last week. She finished fourth on the 3-meter and third on the platform at Zones, while finishing third on platform at Pac-12’s.
“This is a great chance for Kersten to truly test herself against the best competition in the country,” added head diving coach Richard Marshner about Merry. “I couldn't be more excited for her to have this opportunity and I think she will continue to carry the momentum that she has built from Pac-12s and the NCAA Zone meet. I can't overstate how remarkable her performance at Zones was. To set a new school record and set two personal bests at the most difficult meet of the year is nothing short of remarkable. NCAAs are going to be fun.”
