Purss Becomes Third Ute to Qualify for NCAA Championships

March 22, 2013

SALT LAKE CITY – With a record-breaking performance at the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships, freshman Josiah Purss became the second diver in University of Utah history to qualify for the NCAA Men’s Championships. Purss will represent the University of Utah in Indianapolis, Ind. March 28-30 along with teammates Nick Soedel and Kristian Kron.

"With Josiah making NCAAs, it really announces to the country that we have arrived as a program,” Interim Director of Swimming & Diving Richard Marschner said. “Utah is one of only 20 schools to have a male diver competing at NCAAs, so this puts us in elite company.  Utah has not had more than two team members compete at the Men's NCAA meet in over 20 years so we have taken a big first step in re-establishing this program among the nation's elite."

Hailing from Wauchope, Australia, Purss joined the Ute program in January and has been a stand out on the boards since.

Purss recorded a new Utah school record on the platform at the NCAA Zone E Championships with 314.10 points collected. His sixth-place finish was the highest-ever Ute placement at a zone championship meet. He also took fourth in the 1-meter (704.05) and eighth in the 3-meter (679.65).

At the Pac-12 Conference Championships earlier in March, Purss placed sixth on the platform (307.50), 6th in the 3-meter (353.55) and 10th in the 1-meter (311.75). He was the only Ute to place in the top-10 of all three events.
