This Week

The University of Utah men's and women's swimming and diving teams will go head-to-head with the UNLV Rebels Saturday at Ute Natatorium at 12 p.m.

Last Week

Last week, the Utah women won 11 races and topped the Washington State Cougars 147-115.

Ute freshman LeighAnne Oliver claimed spotlight against the Cougars when she brought in her first-ever collegiate win in the 1000 free (10:44.56).

Hannah Caron collected points for the Utes, winning three individual events including the 200 free (1:52.94), the 100 fly (56.96) and the 200 IM (2:06.90).

Two wins were earned by Traycie Swartz in the 100 back (57.03) and the 100 free (51.78), while Samantha Zuch brought in two wins in the 100 breast (1:04.22) and the 500 free (5:06.03).

Caron, Swartz, Zuch and Nicole Ligeza collectively took the top spot in the 200 medley relay (1:44.93), while Ligeza, Zuch, Chardonnay Biter-Mundt and Madeline Jamora finished first in the 400 free relay (3:31.66).

Ligeza brought in the final Ute win in the 200 breast (2:25.90).

Last Meeting

In the last face-off between the Rebels and the Utes, the outcome was split with the Utah women squeaking out a159-141 win and the Utah men falling short, 111.5-179.5.

Zuch and Caron assumed five individual first-place finishes while contributing to two winning relays.

Ellis Walters swept the competition in the 1 and 3-meter dives with scores of 287.03 and 286.20.



Karson Applin brought in a win in the 200 IM, while Major Robinson won the 200 back and Eric Bonicelli won the 200 fly.

Scouting the Opposition

The Rebels enter the 2011-12 season as a Mountain West favorite. Under 31-year head coach Jim Reitz, the men's team won its seventh straight MWC championship as the women's squad brought home fourth place.

Eight UNLV swimming and diving team members were selected to compete at the 2011 NCAA Championships. Four of those chosen have returned to compete in 2011-12, including Cody Roberts, Andrew Morrell, Steven Nelms and Charlie Tapp.

Roberts was included in the 14th place 200 free relay and the eighth-place 200 medley relay at the NCAA Championships. He is the reigning MW champion in the 100 fly and holds the conference record in the same event.

Morrell ended the 2010-11 season as a member of the eighth-place 200 medley relay and with a 28th-place finish in the 100 breast at the NCAA Championships.

Morrell earned Honorable Mention All-American recognition for his performance. Nelms also received Honorable Mention All-American honors for his outstanding year.
