Nicole Ligeza swept her individual events against BYU

SALT LAKE CITY – Coming off a joint win against BYU last weekend, the Utes are ready to take on the Arizona State Sun Devils in a Pac-12 Conference dual meet this weekend. The meet will take place on Sunday at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center at 1 p.m.

“We are excited to dive in against Pac-12 competition at ASU on Sunday to see where we stand against one of the best teams in the country,” said Utah head coach Greg Winslow. “It will be a great chance for us to celebrate a great semester in the classroom and to shake off some of the stress that comes with finals week before we begin winter break training next week.”
The Utes head into the weekend with a 3-1 dual meet record on the men’s side and a 4-4 record on the women’s. Along the way, the Utes have been consistently getting stronger, capturing school records and boasting some of the fastest times in the country.
Bence Kira’ly holds the 38th-fastest time in the country in the 400 IM (2:52.30) and also 41st in the 500 free (4:23.22).
Utah men’s relays hold true to their reputation among the fastest in the NCAA as the 200 free relay is 45th in the country (1:21.56) and the 400 free relay is 31st (2:58.46).
For the Ute women, Traycie Swartz ranks 46th in the 50 free (22.79) and 45th in the 100 back (53.92), the two events she competed in at the NCAA Championships last year.
The women’s 200 medley relay team currently has the 28th-fastest time in the country (3:40.66).
Last Time Out: BYU
For the first time since 2005, both the Utah men’s and women’s squads beat the BYU Cougars, capturing the Deseret Dual title in front of a roaring home crowd at Ute Natatorium.
The women sped away from the Cougars, 181-117, as the men edged by BYU with a final score of 156-144.
Zuch took home the top spot in the 1000 free (10:28.54), the 500 free (5:02.94) and the 200 free (1:51.26), while Swartz won the 100 back (56.83), the 100 free (52.24) and the 50 free (23.76).
Ligeza contributed wins in the 100 breast (1:04.56), the 200 breast (2:19.91) and the 200 IM (2:05.38).
Kersten Merry topped the 1-meter boards for the Utes.
The Ute women summed up their effort with a win in the 400 free relay to complete the evening.
Kira’ly led the Utah men with three individual wins, heading the 100 free (9:31.74), the 500 free (5:02.94) and the 200 fly (1:52.32).
Kron contributed two wins in the 200 back (2:05.09) and the 200 IM (2:05.38), while Jonas Holmstrom finished first in the 200 free (1:40.72).
Alexandre Fernandes claimed a win in the 100 fly (50.56).
Scouting the Competition
Last week, the Arizona State women were ranked No. 16 in the country in the CollegeSwimming.com Endless Pool poll. The Sun Devils will compete this weekend against the Utes for the first time in almost a month. The Sun Devils last meet was Nov. 15-17 at the Area Invitational in Long Beach, Calif. The women’s squad was the runner-up of a 16-team pool, while the men placed eighth of 11 teams.
Last week, ASU Diver Harrison Jones was named Pac-12 Diver of the Month for November. Jones swept every event he competed in in the month of November, including victories against UC Bakersfield, USC and topping the 1-meter and 3-meter at the Wildcat Invitational.
