The Utah swimming and diving teams have had a strong beginning to the season, with 22 new school records, 37 NCAA standard times and 31 NCAA top 50 times. Both the Utah men and women are ranked 22nd in the midseason College Swim Coaches Association of America poll.

"The thing I'm most pleased with is that even though we've had a lot of success - a lot of records, a lot of best times, rankings and recognition, what I'm most pleased with is that nobody on the team feels satisfied," Utah head coach Joe Dykstra said. "Everyone recognizes that there is still a lot of room for improvement and we've got a long way to go.

The Utah men are 3-0 this season and 1-0 in the Pac-12. The Utes have beaten two ranked teams, fifth-ranked Arizona and 23rd-ranked UNLV. Utah also has a win over Colorado Mesa and won 18 of 20 events in a non-scored exhibition against Hawaii.

The Utah women are 4-1 and 1-1 in the Pac-12. Utah has wins over Oregon State, Boise State and UNLV. The Utes only loss this season came against 10th-ranked Arizona. Utah also won 15 of 20 events in a non-scored exhibition against Hawaii.

Highlights of the early season include Nick Soedel, who has an NCAA A standard time in the 100 free as well as top-10 times in the NCAA in both the 50 free and 100 free. Traycie Swartz also has top-10 times nationally in both the 50 free and 100 free for the women. Bence Kiraly broke a 25-year-old school record in the 200 fly. Stina Colleou's time in the 200 breast is second in the Pac-12, and she was recently the top collegiate competitor in the event at the US Short Course Nationals. Diver Jacob Crayne recently defeated last year's SEC Diver of the Year at the Missouri Invitational in the 1-meter. The men's 800 free relay team of Soedel, Jonas Holmstrom, Bence Kiraly and Kristian Kron have the eighth-best time in the nation in the event, while the 400 free relay team of Soedel, Alex Fernandes, Ken Tiltges and Holmstrom have the 10th-best time in the NCAA.

Utah starts the new year with a home meet against Arizona State on Jan. 5. The Utes will face a tough challenge with meets at USC with both the men and women ranked in the top six. The women's meet at 16th-ranked UCLA on Jan. 11 will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks. Utah will also face BYU, Denver and Washington State in dual meets, and the divers travel to the Air Force Diving Invitational Jan. 31- Feb. 1. The Pac-12 women's championship goes from Feb. 26-March 1 with the men's going from March 5-8. Zone Diving and the NCAA Championships close out the year in March.

"For next six weeks or so, I'm looking for really hard work and a lot of discipline," Dykstra said. "We will give them some time off for the holiday, so they've got to do a great job staying in shape when they go home, be ready to attack when we come back here, and then we've got to get through some dual meets where we're going to be swimming pretty tired at the beginning of the year. Every team does that, and we've got to be mentally tough to get through tough training and some tough dual meets in January before we start really getting to go fast in February and March."

The Utes signed 19 athletes to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period. Including the 2013 recruiting class, which also signed 19 swimmers, Dykstra has brought 38 new athletes into the program in his first year as head coach.

"We've been excited about the new faces we've been able to bring to the program," Dykstra said. "We feel like we've upped our level of competition and we're just going to continue to get better."
