Utah distance runners open 2014 season in Washington.

POCATELLO, Idaho- The Utah women's track and field team wrapped up the first day of competition at the Mountain State Games led by senior Nikkie Rudder's first-place finish in the shot put.
Rudder recorded a throw measuring 14.42 meters (47 feet, 3.75 inches). Rudder was followed by freshman Kassie Nagel. Nagel's throw of 12.90 (42 feet, 4 inches) was good enough to capture seventh.
Sophomore Jameela Hayes qualified for Saturday's finals in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.91, which earned her third-place in the preliminary round.
In the 200, freshman Danielle Perez ran a time of 26.07 and placed tenth in the preliminary round followed by Hayes in 12th (26.12).
Junior Suzie Vozarova competed well for the Utes in the pentathlon. In the shot put, she threw a mark of 31 feet, 5.75 inches (third). Vozarova hit 13 feet, 9.5 inches in the long jump. In the high jump, Vozarova earned second with a mark of 5 feet, 0.5 inches. She finished the 60-meter hurdles in 9.41. Overall, Vozarova placed eighth and earned 2915 points.
Meanwhile, the distance group traveled to Washington for the Washington Invitational. Competing in their only event of the day, the Utes placed fourth in the distance medley relay with a time of 12:04.70. The medley consisted of Nikki Rietz, Stephanie Jolley, Dana Snell and Becky Sarmiento.
The distance runners continue competition in Seattle at 9:30 a.m. with the 3000 m. The rest of the Utah track and field team return to action in Pocatello at 11 a.m. with the weight throw.
