SEATTLE, Wash. – On the second day of action at the MPSF Championships, the University of Utah women’s track and field team set two school records and earned one event champion.

“We had a great day,” Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said following the meet. “Our kids performed very well. I was pleased with how hard they competed and our kids represented themselves very well today.”

Junior Amanda Mergaert caught the spotlight in the mile as she recorded the best performance in school history. On the final stretch of the race, Mergaert edged BYU’s Katie Palmer by half of a second to win the event title. Mergaert clocked a time of 4:39.29, beating her previous school-record time by five seconds.

Breaking the second school record of the day was the Ute’s 4x400m relay team. The relay featured Lauryn McKay, Ali Eisenbeiss, Rosalie Griffin, and Lucy Yates. The relay set a record time of 3:45.27 to beat the previous school record by .08 of a second. On the final leg, Yates held off Washington’s Jordan Carlson to secure a seventh-place finish for the Utes.

In the first event of the day, junior Klaudia Rokossa got things started off quickly for the Utes. Rokossa finished 11th in the pole vault, clearing a new lifetime-best mark of 12-10.75.

The 400m race showcased McKay and junior Stephanie Jolley. Finishing first for the Utes and 16th overall was McKay with personal-best performance of 56.37. Jolley also set a new personal-record, finishing with a time of 57.58 for 26th.

Coming off a personal-record performance on Friday in the five-kilometer race, freshman Susannah Hurst continued on Saturday setting another personal record. Hurst finished the 3000m with a time of 9:44.01, beating her previous best by 10 seconds earning 22nd overall. Hurst’s performance ranks third all-time in school history.

Leading the Utes in the 800m was Yates with a time of 2:10.45 finished 10th overall. Eisenbeiss finished second for the Utes and 11th overall with a new personal-record time of 2:10.59. Griffin earned the 12th spot with a time of 2:11.65, respectively for the Utes.

In the shot put, the Utes had two athletes finish in the top-10. Candus Aiello finished first for the Utes and seventh overall recording a throw of 46-10.25 feet. Junior Nikkie Rudder claimed the eighth spot with a throw of 46-2.50 feet. Alanna Nulph finished the day 12th with a mark of 43-5.75 and sophomore Destanae Howerton-Davis secured the 14th spot with a throw of 42-4.76 feet.
