COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Utah indoor track and field teams finished the second day of competition for the 2004 Mountain West Conference Championships on Friday, Feb. 27. After two days of competition, the four-time defending conference champion BYU women's team and Colorado State men's team are in first. Utah's women's team is in fourth with 35.50 points while the men are in sixth place with three points.
Natasha Eldridge was the runner up in the weight throw and posted a new personal record, throwing 17.55m. Tracy Hamblin finished second in the pole vault, jumping 3.87m, a new personal record. Becky Riddle finished behind Eldridge in the weight throw for third place. Her mark of 17.47m shattered her previous personal record. Newcomer Amanda Fiegt had another stellar performance in the long jump finishing third with a personal best 5.82m.
The Utes got several impressive performances in the preliminary events. Nellie Hammons finished first in the 800m (2:17.03) and will advance to the finals. Jennie Haertel had an impressive performance in the mile run finishing first (5:16.88) and advancing to the finals.
No Ute women advanced in the 60-meter hurdles but Jen Jackman, Jennifer Kaplar, Aubrey Startin and Lauren Browning all set personal records. Kaplar also set a personal record in the 200m but didn't advance to the finals.
"We had a great first day," states Head Coach Lisa Archer. "We are excited to go back and get some great marks in the high jump and shot put. We hope to get a conference champion with Nellie Hammons in the 800m and a school record in the 4x400 meter relay."
