TEMPE, Ariz. – Getting the Arizona State Sun Angel Classic underway, the Utah women throwers had a solid outing in the hammer throw. Sophomore Aoife Hickey led the Utes in the elite competition with a fifth-place performance.
In the hammer throw elite competition, Hickey captured fifth posting a personal-best mark of 196-5 feet. Hickey’s performance ranks fourth all-time in school history and is currently the 18th top mark in the nation.
Senior Anneli Stahl competed in the open hammer throw finishing fifth overall. Stahl had some top throws during the warm up, but was unable to carry that momentum into the official attempts. Stahl posted a top-mark of 196-5 feet.
“We are very happy with how things went today,” Utah assistant coach Tapio Kuusela said. “Anneli looked really good in warm-ups and the first round, but had some difficulties later. In Aoife’s first throws, we were focused on technique and were able to get a really good throw. It was a good day and we are looking forward to tomorrow.”
The Utes return to competition on Saturday at 11 a.m. MDT with the pole vault.
