PALO ALTO, Calif.- The Utes conclude the first day at the Stanford Invitational recording several solid performances. Junior Rebekah Winterton led the team with her performance in the 5,000-meter run.
“Overall, I thought we had a great first day,” Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. “There were some things that I thought we did very well, and some things that we can improve upon as we move forward this season. We keep getting better with every week and we accomplished what we were hoping for at this meet.“
Recovering from a viral infection, Winterton fought through the illness to finish in 8th place in the 5000-meter section two heat. Winterton’s time of 16:08.24 is not only a new personal record, but is also fast enough to surpass former Ute track star Alyssa Abbott’s previous school-record by ten seconds.
“Rebekah ran an terrific race,” Kepler said. “She had a viral infection earlier in the week, which kept her from doing some workouts. To come out here and do what she did, despite her illness, is amazing. She was patient throughout the race and finished well and I could not be more proud of her.”
Representing Utah in the 10,000 was junior Susannah Hurst. Hurst’s time of 33:55.98 makes her the second Utah runner ever to break 34 minutes in this event. Competing in the second section, Hurst finished fifth in her heat.
“I’m really proud of Susannah,” Kepler said. “She competed well throughout the race and her time is another mark that will definitely qualify for the first round of the NCAA meet.”
Junior Andrea Chavez competed in the 1500-meter for the Utes. Chavez ran in section eight, where she recorded a fourth-place time of 4:37.52.
Competing up the road at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival was Lauren Mills in the 5000. Mills recorded a new personal best time of 17:33.94 and finished fifth in section three. AuraLea Fain and Jessica Sams also competed in the 5000, finishing 16th and 17th in their sections.
True freshmen Becky Sarmiento and Dana Snell competed in the 1500 for the Utes. Sarmiento ran in section three and captured first-place in her heat with a time of 4:43.88. Snell also competed well, finishing second in section four with a time of 4:41.76.
The Utes will resume action Saturday with the 800-meter run at 2:34 p.m. PST. The race will be held at the Cobb Track in Palo Alto, Calif.
