PALO ALTO, Calif.- The Utes conclude the first day at the Stanford Invitational recording several solid performances. Junior Amanda Mergaert led the team with her performance in the 1500m.

“It was a decent night for us,” Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. “It was not a disappointing performance, but not exactly what we wanted. It is early in the season and I saw some good things, but we also have a few things that we need to work on. This was the first time our freshmen have competed in these events and they have a few things to work on, but I felt that they ran hard. There is nothing that we can’t fix. Our school has a history of performing well in big meets and we will fine tune some things and get where we need to be for our meet at home next week.”

Making her season debut, Mergaert fought through an aggravated leg injury to finish 12th place in the 1500m section one heat with a time of 4:26.18. Mergaert’s time set a new lifetime best for a season debut performance.

Freshman Andrea Chavez competed in her first ever 1500m collegiate race. Chavez ran in section three, where she recorded a 12th-place time of 4:32.36.

“I felt Andrea ran exceptional in the first 800m of the race,” Kepler said. “The last half of the race she struggled a bit. She has the qualities to do very well, she just needs to keep training hard.”

Representing the Utes in the 5000m was true freshman Susannah Hurst. In section three, Hurst finished 15th place with a time of 16:45.63, which is close to her personal-record performance that ranks in the top-five in school history.

Competing unattached up the road at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival was redshirting senior Lucy Yates. In the 1500m run, Yates finished first overall with a time of 4:29.01. Because Yates is redshirting this season, she ran as an unattached athlete.

On Saturday, Chavez will be the only Utah athlete racing. She is scheduled to run in the 800m beginning at 1:30 p.m. PST. The race will be held at the Cobb Track in Palo Alto, Calif.
