WALNUT, Calif.– Winding up three consecutive days of competition, the University of Utah women’s track and field team posts a solid outing, including a school-record throw in the discus.

“Overall we had a pretty solid weekend,” Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. “Our team responded well today after struggling a bit yesterday. We had some great things happen today, including a school record performance in the discus. We accomplished what we needed to this weekend, and now need to get back to work as we move closer to the conference meet.”

For the second straight week, junior Destanae Howerton-Davis broke the school record in the discus. A Las Vegas native, Howerton-Davis beat her own mark with a throw of 51.57 meters on the second to final attempt. The toss breaks the school record and secured fourth overall at the Long Beach State Invitational.

Running in the 800m, senior Amanda Mergaert clocked the second-fastest time in school history. With a head wind pushing against her down one of the straight a ways, Mergaert fought through to win the event in comfortable fashion. Leading the pack with 250 meters remaining, Mergaert turned on a boost of speed to stretch the lead and win in a time of 2:06.33, falling just shy of breaking teammate Lucy Yates’s school record.

Racing in her first 5K ever, Giselle Slotboom posted the sixth-fastest time in school history. Slotboom finished in a time of 17:07.15 for second overall and first collegiate athlete to finish.

The 400m hurdles featured teammates Rosalie Waller and Alyssa Johnson finishing in the top-20. Waller recorded a new personal-best time of 1:00.96 for 11th, while Johnson claimed 19th with a time of 1:01.70.

In the 200m, Lauryn McKay finished third in her heat and 41st overall with a personal-record 25.09 seconds.

In the 100m dash, Kia Wilson took 11th with 12.86 seconds followed by Jameela Hayes in 13th with 13.09 seconds.

The Utes will run next at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa on April 24.
