Rosalie Waller advances to the NCAA Championships in the 800 meters
May 30, 2014
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Utah's Rosalie Waller placed third in the quarterfinals of the 800 meters at the NCAA Preliminary Meet this evening and advanced to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Waller finished in 2:04.76, narrowly missing her fastest time in the event. She ran the 800m in 2:04.71 earlier this season at the Drake Relays.
"Rose got out slowly and she picked up after the first 200," head coach Kyle Keplersaid. "She has kind of perfected that move where she can gain ground in the second 200 meters. Then she was in position and battled with the pack. She tripped a little and gathered herself off the turn and got it going when she needed to turn it on."
Waller qualified automatically by finishing three-hundredths of a second ahead of Sonia Gaskin from Kansas State. Overall, the Utah senior placed third out of 24 competitors.
Last year, Waller finished sixth in her heat during the quarterfinals with a time of 2:08.54. She had advanced after running a preliminary time of 2:07.91.
At the Pac-12 championships two weeks ago, Waller placed second with a time 2:07.20.
Teammate Ali Eisenbeiss finished eighth in the second heat of the 800m with a time of 2:11.20. The junior improved upon her result at the Pac-12 Championships where she ran the event in 2:11.39.
"It's always tough to run a championship race," Kepler added. "Allie has had a terrific season and is following the exact path Rosalie was on last year with better times. To finish up at a NCAA event is always a positive thing in my book. I hope she feels the same."
"We have a good chance tomorrow to qualify some more athletes," Kepler stated. "We never know. That's why we run the races and are always prepared to compete in these types of events."
