EUGENE, Ore. - University of Utah freshman Rebekah Winterton finished fifth place in the five kilometer race at the U.S. Outdoor Track & Field Junior Championships on Friday. Winterton clocked a personal-best time of 17:19.00 in the final race of the season for the Utes.
"She was very focused and ran a terrific race," said Utah head coach Kyle Kepler. "Rebekah was aggressive when she needed to be and patient when required as well. This experience will benefit her for years to come."
Winterton entered the day with a season-best time of 18:00.87, which she had earned at the Arizona State Invitational in April. In the final race of her freshman season, Winterton set a career-best time of 17:19.00 and finished fifth overall in the junior women's five kilometer event.
"This marks the second consecutive year that we have had top-five finishers at this meet (Amanda Mergaert 1500m, 2010)," stated Kepler. "The quality and development of our recruits continues to improve and this is a sign of that."
Winterton's strong performance marks the final race of the 2011 outdoor track and field season for the Utes.
