SALT LAKE CITY- The Utah women's track and field team gears up to compete at the Washington Invitational in Seattle, Washington on Friday. The runners will begin on Friday at 5:40 p.m. PT at the Dempsey Indoor Track. Athletes not competing at the Washington Invitational will be at the Mountain State Games in Pocatello, Idaho on Friday.
"This weekend we are going split up again and for the first time this season we are going to see the distance runners," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "As we get into February we will bring the whole team together and start to compete our best kids all together at the same meet. But for now, we do this to take advantage of the facilities and the types of meets that are going on and it will help us be better at the end of the season."
Making their season debuts this weekend in Seattle will be the Utah distance athletes. Redshirt junior Rebekah Winterton is looking to pick up right where she left off from the 2013 cross country season where she closed the season with an appearance at the 2013 NCAA Cross Country Championships. Junior Susannah Hurst and redshirt sophomore Andrea Chavez are also set to compete in the distance events for the Utes. Hurst finished eighth in the 5000 meters at the MPSF Championships last season. Chavez earned 14th place at the MPSF Championships in the mile in 2012.
The throwers are coming off an impressive performance at the Cherry and Silver Invitational last week. In the weight throw, senior Aoife Hickey captured sixth and Nikkie Rudder secured eighth place. Rudder was also able to place seventh in the shot put, followed by true freshman Kassie Nagel in 13th-place.
