SALT LAKE CITY-The University of Utah women’s track and field team prepares to head to the Husky Invitational for its first big test of the season on Friday. The Utes will begin competition at 4 p.m. PT at the Dempsey Indoor Arena in Seattle, Wash.

“I thought we had a really good meet this past weekend,” Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. “Our kids stepped up and we had a lot of kids with performances that is where they ended last season. So we are about a month ahead of where we were last season. We are really excited for this meet, heading to a big national meet in Washington.”

Leading the way in the distance events and making her second appearance of the season will be senior Amanda Mergaert. In her first race of the year, Mergaert won the 800m at the New Mexico Invitational posting the second-fastest time in school history.

Senior Anneli Stahl will be the top threat in the weight throw, already posting two marks over 60 feet this season. The shot put will be headed by junior Destanae Howerton-Davis, who has already had a breakout year.

In the high jump, senior Langley Iverson is determined to get back to form after taking 2012 off due to injury. In two meets this season, Iverson has continued to show improvement and now looks to take another big step against heavy competition at the Husky Invitational.

“I really like where we are at on the mental side of things,” Kepler said. “I think this past weekend really cleaned a lot of things up. In practice it is tough to emulate a meet, the only way to do that is going to a meet. We have had two or three meets with most of our team which have helped. We will work in practice to clean a few small things up, but really happy with not only the physical approach but mental approach as well. I think we are on our way to seeing one of the best seasons this program has ever had.”
