SALT LAKE CITY- Utah track and field has announced the signing of seven student-athletes to National Letters of Intent for the 2014-15 season.
Utah's incoming athletes include Sarah Feeny (Ogden, Utah/Distance), Claire MacMillan (Felton, Calif./Distance), Mesa Weidle (Rock Springs, Wyo./Sprints), Michelle Norman (Vista Murrieta, Calif./Sprints and Jumps), Shaylen Crook (Coos Bay, Ore./Distance), Sadie Wassum (Worland, Wyo./Middle Distance) and Dakota Grossman (Haiku, Hawaii/Distance).
"We are very excited about this class," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "We believe we have found some outstanding student athletes who are very excited to be part of our program. We expect that each of them will make an immediate impact at the conference, regional, and national level. Their high school accolades are incredibly impressive and include four state team titles, 14 individual state titles, and numerous national, all-state, and all-conference honors. With a 3.78 average GPA, they have all excelled in the classroom, and we know they are looking forward to earning their degrees from our world-class university in a variety of academic programs. "

Ogden High School
Arguably the best distance runner to ever come out of Utah ... the state high school record-holder in the mile with a time of 4:46.24, which was seventh in the U.S. last year ... cross country All-American, finishing 14th at the Footlocker Championships last season ... set the state cross country record for Utah as a senior ... state record holder at in the 3,200 and 1,600 medley relay ... led high school teams to one track and two cross country team championships ... five-time state champion in cross country and track ... has an 800-meter PR of 2:12.72 ... National Honor Society vice president ... 4.00 GPA.
Kepler on Feeny: "Sarah will graduate high school as possibly the most accomplished distance runner in the Utah high school history. She has a unique blend of speed and endurance that makes her a contender at any distance she chooses to run. That type of versatility combined with her competitive drive will allow her to continue to improve throughout her collegiate career and beyond."
San Lorenzo Valley High School
A key contributor to the Division 4 state cross country championship team ... placed fourth in the state in cross country, running 18:17 in the 5K ... won her section of the 3,200 at Golden West Invite ... finished second in her 1,600 section at Arcadia as a junior ... placed sixth at the Mt. SAC Cross Country Invite ... has a PR 1,600 time of 5:03.86 and 10:58 in the 3,200 ... 3.49 GPA.
Kepler on MacMillan: "Claire has made a career of performing well at the biggest and best meets in the state of California. She has been a big time team scorer and has continued to improve throughout her career. We expect she will continue to do the same in our program. Being a leader on a state championship team will also be a huge asset for us."
Rock Springs, Wyo.
Rock Springs High School
Ranked as the No. 2 400-meter runner in Wyoming ... has a PR of 55.90 in the 400 ... runner up finish in the 400 at the Wyoming state championships ... Dyestat Top 50 Elite List and top 50 time by a junior in the U.S. ... carries a time of 25.66 in the 200-meter ... won the USHTCA Indoor 400 title as a senior ... 3.57 GPA.
Kepler on Weidle: "We feel like Mesa has a huge upside. Her breakthrough at the state meet last year is a sign of the talent she possesses. We believe she will be able to provide the quality and depth that our sprint program has become known for."
Vista Murrieta, Calif.
Vista Murrieta High School
Recorded the 15th-best long jump in California (#6 by a junior) last season with a jump measuring 18 feet, 10.75 inches ... has a PR of 38 feet, five inches in the triple jump ... ran a PR of 12.16 in the 100-meter ... ranked among top 40 junior long jumpers in the U.S. in 2013 ... 3.97 GPA.
Kepler on Norman: "Michelle is an extremely talented athlete. Her blend of speed and power combined with her long athletic build will be a huge asset as she develops. We expect her to continue to raise the bar within the conference and on the national level within our youthful sprints and jumps groups."
Coos Bay, Ore.
Marshfield High School
The 2013 4A cross country champion in Oregon ... has a 5K best of 17:57.10 ... ran lifetime best of 10:22 in the 3,000 meters while placing third at the state track championships as a junior ... 3.976 GPA.
Kepler on Crook: "Shaylen is a kid who has worked incredibly hard to improve herself into a Division I level runner. She improved her time at the state cross country meet by 1:15 from her junior to her senior years and went from 12th place to being the individual champion. She's a late bloomer who we think will continue to develop in cross country and the longer distances on the track."
Worland High School
The Wyoming state record holder in the 800 meters with a time of 2:16.92 ... all-state honoree in the 800 as a junior ... finished fifth at 800 meters in the Simplot Games ... finished third at the state cross country championships ... 3.95 GPA.
Kepler on Wassum: "Sadie is another late bloomer who has trained mostly by herself and sometimes without a true distance coach. She is another runner with a unique blend of speed and endurance that we believe will serve her well in her continued development at the collegiate level. She will be very versatile and that will be a huge advantage in our program."
Four-time state cross country champion (four different courses on four different islands) ... four-time state track champion in the 1,500 and 3,000 ... PR's of 4:37.23 (1,500) and 10:36.77 (3,000) ... four-time Hawaii Gatorade High School Cross Country Runner of the Year (2010-13) ... nationally, one of only four runners to win the award in their state all four years ... 3.55 GPA.
Kepler on Grossman: "Dakota is a very talented runner who has progressed all four years during high school. We believe she will be a great all around distance runner in our program who will contribute at a high level year round. She is another great 'big meet' performer who competes her best against great competition."
