SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah women's track and field team gets the 2012 outdoor season underway this Friday at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego, Calif. Competition at the San Diego State University Sports Deck is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. PST.

"We expect this meet to be a very good meet," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "Several teams will be participating and many of the California schools have already had an outdoor meet or two. We want to compete well and get our barrings on the outdoor circuit again. The hammer and both hurdle events will be in action for the first time. Hopefully, those athletes can get off to a good start and we can keep the others moving forward."

Senior Brianna LeRoy will get the action underway in the heptathlon long jump. Last season, LeRoy finished second place at both the Drake Relays and Mountain West Conference Championships in the heptathlon. Now in her senior season, LeRoy is determined to make one last run to qualify for the NCAA Championships and earn All-American status.

The throwing events will feature Utes competing in the shot, discus and hammer throw. Junior Nikkie Rudder will lead the way in the shot put. Last season, Rudder earned seven top-10 finishes in the shot put and looks to establish herself among the elite throwers in the Pac-12 Conference this year.

Last season, junior Anneli Stahl finished in the top-five seven separate times, including a third-place performance at the Mountain West Conference Championships in the hammer throw.

"The weather here in Salt Lake has allowed us to be outdoors a little more than usual," Kepler said. "The coaching staff and I all agree that we might be a little ahead of where we have been at this point in past seasons. However, there is always a transition that has to be made with some of the events, with the bigger track, and the weather elements now in play. Regardless, we still expect some great performances from this group of athletes."

Utah athletes are slated to compete in all events with the exception of the distance races.
