SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah women's track and field team gets the 2014 outdoor season underway this Friday at the Trojan Invitational in Los Angeles, Calif. Competition will begin at 2 p.m. PT with the hammer throw at Locker Stadium.
"We need to continue to develop and improve as we transition to the outdoor season," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "We need to stay focused and make the necessary adjustments to perform well early in the season. There are different elements that come into play when we move outdoors, like the weather, and we need to learn how to deal with them."
Returning to competition after redshirting the indoor season is senior Alyssa Johnson, who is ready to assume a leadership role and compete again in the 400-meter hurdles. Last year, Johnson finished 11th in the 400 hurdles at the Pac-12 Championships with a time of 1:00.62 and looks to build upon that success.
The throwing events will feature Utes competing in the shot, discus and hammer throw. Senior Nikkie Rudder will lead the way for the Utes in the shot put. Rudder is coming off a ninth-place finish at the MPSF Championships and has established herself among the elite throwers in the Pac-12 Conference this year. Junior Aoife Hickey will compete for the Utes in the hammer throw.
