SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's track and field team spreads out this weekend competing at three separate meets. The distance runners will to the San Francisco Bay area to compete at the Stanford and the San Francisco State Invitational's. Throwers and relay teams will stay close to home as they are slated to compete at the UVU Open in Orem, Utah.
"The Stanford Invitational is a huge meet where half of the automatic NCAA qualifying marks will be made in middle distance and distance events," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "For those of our runners who did not qualify for the Stanford meet because it is such a high caliber meet, they will be at the San Francisco State Invitational, which has absolutely beautiful facilities. Then the throwers and relays will compete on Friday at the UVU Open. This weekend is about logistics for us as our team will be very spread out."
Coming off an All-American performance at the NCAA Indoor Championships, senior Amanda Mergaert will make her outdoor's season debut at the Stanford Invitational. In her final season as a collegiate athlete, Mergaert has earned cross country and indoor track and field All-American honors. She will be looking to have a great start in her final quest for the outdoor season honor.
At the UVU Invitational, the throwers will look to have another good performance. Last year at the UVU Open, Kaitlin Urmston broke the school record in the javelin. With a warm day forecasted for Friday, it should provide a great environment to break her own school record in consecutive years.
"We are looking for the chance to get our athletes the opportunities they deserve to get better," Kepler said. "This weekend should provide that opportunity as we try and get better for later in the season."
Those runners competing at the San Francisco State Invitational will start on Friday at 9 a.m. PT at Cox Stadium in San Francisco, Calif.
Throwers and relays will compete on Friday at the UVU Open beginning at 8:30 a.m. MT at Hal Wing Track and Field in Orem, Utah.
