April 16, 2013
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Junior Destanae Howerton-Davis of the Utah women’s track and field team has been named Pac-12 Female Field Athlete of the Week announced by the league office this week.
“This is a well deserved honor for Destanae,” Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. “She had a terrific weekend. Destanae has been working hard with coach Tapio Kuusela to improve her speed and balance in the ring. It is great to see those efforts be rewarded this way.”
A Las Vegas native, Howerton-Davis started off the weekend at the Utah Spring Classic breaking the school record in the shot put with a first-place mark of 48-10 feet. She continued that momentum into the second day of competition at the Weber State Wildcat Invitational beating her own school record in the discus throw. Howerton-Davis won the discus event with a throw of 166-6 feet, ranking 11th in the Pac-12 this season.
With the honor, Howerton-Davis becomes only the second Utah track and field member to earn athlete of the week honors from the Pac-12 Conference.
