SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Eight members of the University of Utah track and field team have qualified for the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Round on Thur., May 29 – Sat., May 31. The three days of competition take place at John McDonnell Field on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville.

“We have a very experienced group heading to the NCAA Preliminaries next weekend,” head coach Kyle Kepler said. “Six of our eight competitors have been here before.  The biggest difference is that the expectations are higher because we have so many individuals ranked around the top 12, which is the magic number to advance.  Our kids have to forget about rankings and focus on bringing the toughness and energy to the track required to advance.  It is an NCAA championship event which truly follows the adage - survive and advance.”

Rosalie Waller, fresh off her second-place finish at the Pac-12 Championships, will compete in the 800m along with Ali Eisenbeiss. The duo also competed in the event last season with Waller advancing to the quarterfinals and finishing sixth in her heat.

Susannah Hurst and Rebekah Winterton are back competing in the 10k and the juniors will also be participating in the 5k event. Both Utes hold school records and Winterton is ranked sixth in the region with a 10k time of 33:28.43. Alyssa Johnson also qualified for the Utes in the 400m hurdles but will not be competing at the event due to injury.

In the field events, Utah will have three participants. Junior Aoife Hickey is back for a second year in a row to compete in the hammer after placing in the top 20 in 2013. She is joined by Ilse Kaaja, who is the highest-ranked freshman in the event. Senior Nikkie Rudder will take part in the shot put after finishing ninth at the Pac-12 Championships last weekend.

“Like the conference meet, this typically doesn’t live up to form,” Kepler added. “There are highs and lows that have to be encountered and I am confident that all of our athletes will compete as hard as they can while enjoying the moment.  We always want them to have fun because they have earned this special opportunity.”

Qualifying teams and individuals advance to the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships to be held at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene, June 11-14.
