SALT LAKE CITY - Senior Brianna LeRoy and junior Amanda Mergaert will represent the University of Utah track & field team at the 2012 Outdoor Championships on June 7-9 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
This will be LeRoy's first-ever appearance at the NCAA Championships. The All-Pac-12 Conference Team selection will compete in the finals of the high jump on Friday, June 8 at 4:30 p.m. CT. The Gig Harbor, Wash., native enters the meet as the 24th seed overall after registering a 5-9.25 (1.76m) mark at the NCAA West Preliminary meet last Saturday in Austin, Texas.
Mergaert's fourth career NCAA Championships performance will begin with the 1,500-meter race semifinal on Thursday, June 7 at 6:30 p.m. CT. Mergaert earned a spot in the NCAA Championships field after taking seventh in the semifinals at the NCAA West Preliminary last Saturday in Austin, Texas. The Shelby Township, Mich., native went on to finish fourth in her heat and seventh overall. Her time of 4:19.23 earned the 15th seed overall in the event.
This is the first time since 2009 that Utah will send multiple athletes to the national championships.
"We are excited to have Bree and Amanda representing our team at the NCAA Finals," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "They have both worked very hard this year to earn those spots. They performed their best when it counted most last weekend and will look to do the same next week."
Seventy-seven athletes from the Pac-12 qualified for the NCAA Women's Championships, the most of any conference in the nation.
