EUGENE, Ore. - Former Ute Shayla Houlihan will compete in the steeplechase preliminaries at the U.S. Track & Field Olympic Trials today at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Houlihan will race at approximately 5:50 p.m. MT.
Houlihan will compete in the first of two preliminary heats, each containing 12 participants. A total of 14 competitors will advance to the final, comprised of the top five from each heat plus four more based on time.
Houlihan, a native of Sioux City, Iowa, competed for Utah during the 2007-08 season and set the Utah school record in the steeplechase (10.43.60), which still stands. She then served as a volunteer assistant for the Utes from 2008-10, during which time she also earned her master's degree in science and health promotion from the U in 2009.
Prior to coming to Utah, Houlihan finished her undergraduate career at the University of Northern Iowa as the school record holder in the steeplechase. She also won the 8,000 meter race at the Drake Relays.
