SALT LAKE CITY - Three Utah track and field standouts will compete in the USA Track and Field Championships this week in Sacramento. Current Utes Rosalie Waller and Stephanie Jolley, along with recent graduate and student assistant coach Amanda Mergaert, will all take part in the four-day event.
Waller recently earned honorable mention All-American status in the 800 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. At the NCAA Preliminaries in Fayetteville, Ark., she placed third in the quarterfinals with a time of 2:04.76. Earlier this season, Waller ran the 800m in 2:04.71 at the Drake Relays, setting a new school record. She also finished second at the Pac-12 Championships in Pullman, Wash. (2:07.20).
Jolley, a two-time NCAA qualifier for the Utes, will be running the 400m hurdles. She completed her eligibility during the indoor season and was part of a record-breaking 4x4 relay team at the MPSF Championships. Jolley also finished 13th in the 400m with a PR time of 55.20.
Mergaert will be competing in the 1500m, an event she excelled in here at Utah. This season while running professionally, she won the top section at the Stanford Invite for the second year in a row in April. Mergaert also finished fourth in the pro section of the Portland Track Festival two weeks ago with a new personal-best mark of 4:12.83.
Waller will be the first Ute to see action, racing in the first round at 4:15 p.m. PT on Thursday. Jolley and Mergaert will run on Friday at 4 p.m. PT and 7:03 p.m. PT respectively. Mergaert's run will also be televised live on NBC Sports Network.
The 2014 USATF Outdoor Championships will bring the nation's best athletes to Northern California while also serving as the final stop on of the 2014 Outdoor USATF Championship Series. Site of the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Trials for Track & Field, Sacramento has hosted several NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007.
