SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah track and field head coach Kyle Kepler has announced the hiring of Burke Bockman as an assistant coach.

"Burke is a great communicator with his student-athletes," remarked Kepler. "He is a knowledgeable, young coach who will bring a lot of enthusiasm and energy to the team. As an athlete, he performed at a high level and I fully expect that he'll perform at the same level as a coach here at the University of Utah."

He will work with the Ute sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers and joins fellow assistant Tapio Kuusela who is entering his fifth year at Utah and will continue to coach the throwers.

Bockman comes to Utah after spending two years as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. There, he helped the Eagles win back-to-back national indoor titles in 2004-05 and the outdoor championship in 2004. During his tenure, the Eagle sprinters and hurdlers flourished. He coached two All-Americans and four national qualifiers. Among his athletes coached were Derek Toshner, the Division III 400m hurdle national champion in 2004, and Marcus Walgrave who was an indoor national qualifier in 2005 with the fourth fastest time in the nation in the high hurdles. The 2005 campaign also saw all five Eagle hurdlers post national qualifying marks for the outdoor championships.

Bockman was a three-time conference champion and a 10-time all-conference honoree at the University of Northern Iowa. He was an NCAA Division I qualifier in the 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay his senior year. Bockman also competed at the USA Outdoor Championships as a senior.

He graduated from Northern Iowa with a degree in business management in 2003 and received his masters from Wisconsin-La Crosse in exercise and sport science in 2005.

A native of Decorah, Iowa, Bockman won 12 letters in high school between track and football.
