SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah cross country team will begin its preparation for the 2012 season on Tuesday Aug. 14 in Eden, Utah, head coach Kyle Kepler announced. The Utes will break camp on Friday, Aug. 17.
Utah secured eighth place with 205 points in its first-ever appearance at the Pac-12 Championships before taking another eight-place finish at the NCAA Mountain Regional in Provo.
"We are all very excited to begin the 2012 cross country season," Kepler said. "This should be the most experienced team we've had at Utah in several years. We have a great nucleus returning, led by senior Amanda Mergaert. We also add two talented newcomers to the mix and will be looking to improve on our conference finish from a year ago as well as push for an NCAA qualifying spot. If we can continue to develop some depth, those goals are well within reach."
Along with Mergaert, junior Rebekah Winterton and sophomore Susannah Hurst return. Winterton was Utah's third finisher at the regional last season, while Hurst registered a top-50 finish in the first conference championship race of her career.
