SALT LAKE CITY -- The University of Utah cross country team was picked to finish sixth in the Mountain West Conference preseason coaches poll released this week, netting a total of 26 points.

"I think that sixth place is a prediction based on our performance from last season," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "Our goal is to finish in the top four of the league and I think that this team is taking steps in the right direction to make our goal for this season a reality."

The Utes return seven runners, including the Utes' top runners from last year (sophomores Alyssa Abbott, and Becky Mackelprang), and welcome three new freshmen. Abbott led the Utes last year as she finished 22nd (22:48.2) at the Mountain West Conference Championships.

Brigham Young's cross country team was chosen to win the 2007 MWC Championship with a total of 63 points. Colorado State was picked to finish second (55 points), and New Mexico claimed the third place spot with 44 points. That was followed by Wyoming (43 points) fourth, TCU (30) fifth, tied for sixth were Air Force and Utah (26), while San Diego State (24) and UNLV (13) rounded out the rest of the league.

Utah's cross country season begins on Aug. 30 at Utah State with the MWC Championships in San Diego on Oct. 27. The NCAA Mountain Regional is Nov. 10 and the National Championship is on Nov. 19.
