SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah cross country team is set to host the Utah Open on Friday. The race is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. MT at Murray Park [296 E Murray Park Ave., Murray, Utah].
"This will be a chance to run hard and simulate race situations," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "We are still searching to find who will be in our lineup in the later part of the season. We have an idea of who our core group of runners will be, but there are some who still need to prove themselves and step up."
Competing for the Utes will be six freshmen who made their collegiate debuts last week at the Utah State Aggie Invitational. Becky Sarmiento made a strong impression by leading the team with a fifth-place performance.
This week, Sarmiento will be joined by a host of upperclassmen who will be making their season debuts.
"We will see how practice goes this week to determine which student-athletes will race," Kepler said. "We will hold some out, just like all the teams who will compete. We want to compete and win this race, but our main focus is to do what needs to get done in order to be at our best for the end of the year."
