Kellie Anderson and the Ute cross country team race at the BYU Autumn Classic this Saturday.
Sept. 7, 2006
The Utes travel to the BYU Autumn Classic in Provo, Utah on Saturday at 10 a.m. The race will be held at the East Bay Golf Course, which was the site of the 2005 NCAA Mountain Region Cross Country Championships.
Last week the Utes went 3-0 at the Reno Chase Race. It was scored as a dual meet. Utah was led by freshman Rebecca Mackelprang who finished second overall with a time of 15:15 in the 4000-meter course.
Also scoring for the Utes were Alyssa Abbott 5th (16:06), Chelsea DiGrazia 6th (16:06), and Kellie Anderson 7th (16:07). Claiming top-20 finishes were Lauren Endersen who placed 14th (16:26), and Janett Ern 17th (16:55).
Team scores for the meet were: Utah 26, Nevada 29; Utah 21, Boise State 36; Utah 16, Sacramento State 55.
Last year Chelsea DiGrazia led the Utes in six of their seven races as a freshman. It seems the freshmen will lead Utah again. Freshman Rebecca Mackelprang paced the Utes with a second-place finish at the Reno Chase Race in Reno Nev. last week, clocking a time of 15:15.
Another freshman looking to move to the front is Alyssa Abbott who was not far behind Mackelprang. She finished 5th last week with a time of 16:06, racing in her hometown.
Both DiGrazia and Kellie Anderson were within one second of Abbott at the Reno Chase Race as well.
"This weekend's BYU Autumn Classic is the being held at the same venue as last year's regional meet. Our goals are not going to change from last week's 4k race. We want to go out and give our best effort, compete hard and to have fun while we do it. It's still early in the year and we have a long way to go. This race is still one of our first steps of the entire process.
"This meet is going to be more challenging than last week's. But, we need to find out where this team stands.
"I'm excited to see if Becky Mackelprang can continue to run up at the front. But, I also want to see our 2-3-4 runners (Chelsea DiGrazia, Kellie Anderson and Alyssa Abbott) close the gap and run closer to Becky. I also want to see our last two runners push to close their gap as well."
On Sept. 16, the Utes will head for Bozeman, Mont. for the Montana State Bobcat Invitational. The race is scheduled for 9:40 a.m.
